Factors to consider when choosing the right down

Fill Power & Volume:

Fill power  measures loft, but warmth, weight, and packability depend on the combination of fill power and the total amount of down used. Higher fill power (think 750–900+) means lighter gear with excellent warmth-to-weight. Larger volumes of down add extra coziness for colder conditions. Choose based on your activity, environment, and how much bulk you’re willing to carry.

Feather-to-Down Ratio:

More down clusters = better insulation, softness, and packability. A higher feather content adds durability but reduces loft and  compressibility. Decide whether you value lightweight comfort or rugged toughness more for your use.

Down Color:

Down naturally comes in white or gray, depending on the waterfowl species and color. Pure white down can occasionally show tiny black spots which is natural and won’t impact performance. White down blends seamlessly with lighter fabrics, while gray works well with darker gear and is often more budget-friendly. Choose the color that fits your style, the warmth and loft remain the same.

Water Repellency:

Down was perfected by nature to insulate waterfowl in damp environments. At SOFTIE, we trust its natural performance in most outdoor and everyday conditions, without unnecessary chemical coatings.

Certification & Ethics:

Your comfort shouldn’t come at the expense of the planet or animal welfare. Look for down products that are responsibly sourced and backed by credible certifications. It’s a choice that feels as good as it performs.
